Veterinary Support for Confiscated Tortoises

In January, MWA provided veterinary support in response to two separate tortoise rescue cases, following formal requests from national authorities.

In the first case, the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) contacted MWA regarding a tortoise held under custody of the Environmental Police (PPRNMA – 13th PRM Station), reportedly originating from the Triunfo area. While ANAC confirmed its availability to collect the animal, MWA was requested to conduct a veterinary assessment, provide rehabilitation guidance, and offer technical support to safeguard the animal’s welfare and advise on its eventual release.

In parallel, MWA received a second tortoise following a police-level report triggered by a public denunciation. ANAC formally requested MWA’s intervention to ensure appropriate veterinary care and species preservation, reinforcing the organisation’s role as a technical partner in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

Both animals are leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis), one of Africa’s largest tortoise species. Although widely distributed, leopard tortoises face increasing pressure from illegal collection for the pet trade, habitat disturbance, and unsustainable removal from the wild. Removing even a single adult from its natural environment can disrupt local population dynamics, particularly given their slow growth and long lifespan.

Both cases remain under veterinary evaluation. Next steps will be coordinated jointly with ANAC and enforcement authorities to ensure compliance with national conservation protocols and the animals’ safe return to suitable habitat.
