Edu: Collar Replacement and Monitoring

Edu, an elephant collared by Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA) in 2024, was recently darted to replace his VHF/SAT collar, as he continues to be identified as a high-risk individual in the context of Human–Wildlife Conflict.
He was located within a group of more than 40 elephants, less than 1 km from a nearby community and active banana fields - an area with elevated conflict risk.
The intervention allowed for the successful replacement of the tracking collar, ensuring continued real-time monitoring of his movements and enabling more effective mitigation measures on the ground.
During the procedure, biological samples, including EDTA blood and a biopsy, were collected for ongoing health and research purposes.
Maintaining accurate tracking of key individuals like Edu is critical to anticipating movements, reducing conflict, and supporting safer coexistence between communities and wildlife.
