Six Hyenas Translocated to Maputo National Park
MWA’s veterinary team led the capture and translocation of six hyenas from Karingani Game Reserve to Maputo National Park, reinforcing the park’s population as part of its predator reintroduction project.
The operation builds on a translocation last year, when approximately six hyenas were moved to the park. That group is thriving, with cubs already recorded, an encouraging sign that the animals are settling in and breeding.
These latest arrivals support the continued recovery of the park’s predator population. One of the project’s objectives is to help regulate herbivore populations, restoring the role of natural predation within the ecosystem.
Moving wildlife between conservation areas requires careful planning and coordination, with animal health and welfare central to each stage. MWA’s veterinary team led the operation, supporting this next step in the park’s restoration.
The translocation was carried out in partnership with ANAC and Peace Parks Foundation, with the support of Karingani Game Reserve.
