Inside MWA’s Largest Buffalo Operation of the Year

MWA’s veterinary team carried out its largest single-species operation of the year, collecting biological samples from 40 buffalo across different conservation areas in Mozambique.

As part of a national buffalo disease survey, 33 buffalo were immobilised to collect samples for testing the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB), tick-borne diseases, brucellosis and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Samples were also collected from seven additional buffalo during separate collaring operations, bringing the total to 40.

Alongside sampling, the programme included five new collar deployments, four collar replacements and one injury treatment.

Among the buffalo fitted with collars were females in herds of 200–250 and 60–70 individuals. A collar was also replaced on a female in a herd of 53, supporting continued monitoring of these groups.

Together, biological sampling and tracking help build a clearer picture of buffalo health and movements, providing evidence to guide disease surveillance and wildlife management across Mozambique. This work was carried out in partnership with the National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), Peace Parks Foundation and Sabie Game Park.
