September in the Field: 111 Wildlife Interventions
What does our busiest veterinary month of the year look like? 111 animal interventions across 22 field operations.
September took MWA’s veterinary team across Mozambique and Malawi, from fitting tracking devices on rhinos to treating injured lions and moving hyenas to a new home.
Here’s a closer look at the month:
🦏 23 tracking pods deployed on black and white rhinos, plus six foot collars, strengthening monitoring across three conservation areas.
🐃 40 buffalo handled for biological sampling in our largest buffalo programme of the year, alongside collar deployments, replacements and injury treatment.
🐘 12 elephants collared, extending monitoring into new landscapes.
🦁 10 lion interventions, including nine collarings and one injury treatment.
🐾 6 hyenas translocated from Karingani Game Reserve to Maputo National Park, with further interventions involving another hyena, a cheetah, a wild dog, eland, sable and zebra.
The work continues beyond each intervention. A collar provides data that can guide conservation decisions for months to come. Biological samples support research and health monitoring. Treatment gives an injured animal a chance to recover.
22 operations completed. Their impact is still unfolding. As animals recover and tracking devices send back data, September’s work continues to inform the teams protecting them every day.
