In this video, we take you behind the scenes of a critical lion translocation operation in Chokwe, Gaza Province. Following reports of two male lions escaping from Limpopo National Park and causing ongoing conflicts by attacking community cattle, our team undertakes the challenging task of capturing these lions for relocation.
Watch as we work meticulously to safely capture the lions and transport them to a holding facility in Karingani Game Reserve. The lions are awaiting further translocation to the Marromeu Complex. This operation is crucial to prevent further conflicts and ensure the safety of both the community and the lions.
Without translocation, the lions would face culling due to their repeated incursions. This collaborative effort is made possible through our partnership with ANAC, Peace Parks Foundation, and Karingani Game Reserve. Special thanks to the Lion Recovery Fund for their financial support, which made this mission possible.
This story follows up on our previous operation in November 2023, where our team, in collaboration with Limpopo National Park, ANAC, the Endangered Wildlife Trust and Peace Parks Foundation, addressed a pressing Human-Wildlife Conflict issue involving these same lions. During that operation, we captured the lions and transported it 85km back to the park. The ongoing efforts highlight the importance of collaborative conservation to maintain the balance between humans and wildlife.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we document the relocation process and the lions' introduction to their new home in the Marromeu Complex.
