The Protected Farming Communities initiative by Mozambique Wildlife Alliance is a scalable model for mitigating Human–Wildlife Conflict in rural Mozambique, while strengthening food security and community-led coexistence.
Bingo–Chitar, implemented earlier this year, is one such example. This Protected Farming Community was established in a resettled area under the Limpopo National Park Resettlement Programme, where farming had long remained exposed to wildlife incursions.
At Bingo–Chitar, the model now protects 35 hectares of communal farmland, benefiting 270 families. Before implementation, agricultural production was highly vulnerable. Today, cultivation takes place within a clearly defined, protected space that is collectively managed by the community.
The before-and-after images illustrate this shift - from open, unprotected fields to a structured farming area designed to support livelihoods while allowing wildlife to move freely beyond the fence.
Bingo–Chitar demonstrates how the Protected Farming Communities model can be effectively applied in resettled landscapes, offering a practical and long-term approach to coexistence between communities and wildlife.
