In September, one male and one female leopard were safely captured in Karingani Game Reserve for translocation to Gorongosa National Park - part of Gorongosa’s ongoing leopard reintroduction program.
Working in collaboration with TB Big Game Hounds, both leopards were located using trained hounds that guided them into the trees, allowing our team to safely tranquilize and recover each animal.
After capture, the leopards were moved to a secure boma in Karingani, where they were monitored for 10 days by the local team to ensure they were fit for transfer. Both individuals have now been successfully translocated to Gorongosa, where they will contribute to the long-term recovery of the park’s predator population.
This operation is part of a broader national effort to restore key predator species to protected areas, and reflects the strength of coordination between conservation actors across Mozambique.
Special thanks to Karingani Game Reserve, Gorongosa National Park, Ivan Carter Wildlife Conservation Alliance, and ANACÂ for their leadership and collaboration in making this possible.
