Another Week in the Field: Karingani Game Reserve (KGR)

MWA’s veterinary team supported the Karingani Game Reserve (KGR) Conservation Department during an intensive wildlife management operation involving elephant and lion collaring, as well as several wildlife translocations.

The majority of the work focused on KGR’s elephants. Ten existing GPS/SAT collars were replaced and one new collar was deployed as part of the reserve’s ongoing 25-elephant recollaring project. Maintaining these collars ensures the continued collection of movement data, helping the team monitor the species and understand how elephants use the wider landscape.

One lion was also safely immobilised and fitted with a GPS/SAT collar for continued monitoring.

Three animals were translocated from the Northern Office area to Mbilu, where pasture availability is better: a kudu bull, a blue wildebeest and a golden wildebeest.

Despite its name and distinctive appearance, the golden wildebeest is not a separate species. It is a rare, naturally occurring genetic colour variation of the blue wildebeest.

Golden wildebeest were recently introduced to KGR from a game farm in South Africa.

While both wildebeest were moved to access better grazing, the kudu bull was also translocated to join the female herd already established in Mbilu, where no bulls were present.
