Earlier this month, MWA received a live pangolin from the authorities, following a seizure in Manhiça District, Maputo Province.
Upon arrival, our veterinary team conducted a full health assessment. The pangolin - a young female - was in stable condition, but one of her scales had been perforated, likely to insert wire as a restraint mechanism. Despite this, she showed no signs of severe trauma or distress
After overnight care and monitoring, she was deemed fit for release. The following day, one of our veterinarians returned her to the wild in a protected area of Maputo National Park.
Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals globally, facing increasing pressure due to illegal trade. Quick intervention, proper handling, and safe release are essential steps in safeguarding this highly threatened species.
